We find this last trait especially in one scene early in the film when Kip goes onstage before an audience consisting of drunken men who soon pelt him with tomatoes, seltzer and anything else on their table. Despite its chirpy title song, the film has a surprising toughness and unsentimentality for its era witness the happily cruel "Men's Club" scene. So I was really excited to see this film, which serves as a kind of origin story for Berle's career, and other vaudeville performers like him.
